Happy 4th! Some of my favorite moments from 14 years of criss-crossing the American West in cars, vans motorcycles, gravel bikes, and on foot… after all, the U.S is the country that shaped me and I owe a so much to its landscape, the spirit of its people, and its good ole “can do” attitude.

We were due for a rainy, low clouds kind of day but after examining our other option which was to sit around and do nothing, we headed out anyways. Much of the morning we didn’t see anything except for rain on the windshield. We stopped at a bridge to check on a glacial river. After a while, we saw the top of a ghostly looking peak appear in the distance, just barely. In a matter of seconds, the fog really started to clear and revealed this view. As usual, happy i headed out the door that morning.

It sounded like a good idea at the time: climb a 3000m peak for sunset on the day of the full moon, wait for it to rise, run down under its cold bright light. So I tried to do that a few days ago and.. well.. the moon didn’t really rise at the time it was supposed to. I thought I’d fill in a complaint with the astronomical department but figured I’d done the mistake myself! It was supposed to rise at 10:24pm but it didn’t. It was pitch black until 2:30am. Which means I had to navigate most of the crux using my phone flash light. Tough when you need to use both hands! I was so confident in my calculation that I left my headlamp with @letriplesept at the hut 1500m below the summit. Lesson learned, I guess?!
